Former Sen. Bob Dole declared Thursday morning that he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
The 97-year-old former GOP senator and presidential nominee declared in a tweet he will start treatment on Monday.
"While I have some challenges ahead, I know that I join millions of Americans who face considerable wellness struggles in their own," Dole said.
He spent his first eight years in Washington as a part of the home of Representatives before committing into the Senate in 1969 and functioning through 1996.
Dole's participation in presidential politics is as long as anybody never to hold the workplace. He ran for president vice president twice came up to get the GOP nomination for president.
Dole was previously honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Bill Clinton, only months after losing the presidential elections .
