Federal press conference reacts with surprise to request from the Chinese embassy

Immediately before Chancellor Olaf Scholz's (SPD) trip to China, the Chinese embassy reported to the capital press association about a press conference on human rights in the Asian country. The member of the board of the federal press conference, the journalist Ute Welty, said at the beginning of an event on Tuesday in Berlin that the board "found with surprise that the Chinese embassy contacted us in the run-up to this PC". She did not give details.

The press conference was entitled: "The China risk: what needs to change in the German government's China strategy?" Questions and answers were given by representatives from Human Rights Watch, the Society for Threatened Peoples and the World Congress of Uyghurs, among others.

Welty made it clear that it was the association's job to hold press conferences "that are of interest to our members". The federal press conference is not part of the federal government and enables parliamentary correspondents to obtain professional information.

She added: "If His Excellency, Ambassador Wu Ken, would like to be a guest here on our terms, then we would be happy to renew the invitation here, which is of course always open to all other ambassadors."

The Federal Press Conference is the association of capital city correspondents in Berlin. He organizes press conferences where the interviewees are guests themselves.

At the invitation of the federal press conference, the President of the World Uyghur Congress, Dolkun Isa, appeared in Berlin on Tuesday - and sharply criticized the travel plans. With the visit to Beijing on Friday, Chancellor Scholz decided to "pay homage to President Xi and thus completely ignore the suffering of millions of people," said Isa.

Isa criticized the fact that Scholz was taking a high-ranking business delegation to Beijing with him. This shows "that for Germany, profit continues to take precedence over human rights." Scholz also contradicts the agreements of the coalition agreement of the traffic light parties. Isa reported on millions of Uyghurs who have been interned in the Chinese province of Xinjiang over the past five years. He spoke of "concentration camps" and accused China of "genocide".

Human Rights Watch Germany director Wenzel Michalski called on Scholz to take a clear stance on human rights violations in China. "The trip should not be canceled," said Michalski at the press conference with Isa. "But you also have to talk about the unpleasant things - namely the human rights violations." Michalski emphasized positively that the chancellor had personally spoken to the human rights activists.
