When my partner Kathy and I have guests over for dinner, we often force them into a few rounds of charades. To speed things up, we'll use charade cards that Kathy found at a toy store. The cards have terms that you have to play out to the others without speaking - movie and book titles, song and TV show titles and, most amusingly, oxymora. The cards come from China, and the maker doesn't seem to have fully grasped the meaning of the word "oxymoron." Some of the terms, such as "young adult," are not oxymorons at all. Others are cruel little two-word jokes: "Ethiopian food" or "Soviet economics". Because there are so many cards in the box, Kathy and I haven't used them all, and I wouldn't be surprised if one night we turned over a card that, as a cruel little joke, said, "American Culture."
