Thursday July 7th: Granada Festival

Palace of Charles V 19:30 p.m.

David Afkham conducts the National Orchestra and Choir of Spain as they return to Granada for their German Requiem. They will be joined by two posh soloists, soprano KatharinaKonradi and baritone Peter Mattei. This work is complex and took more than a decade to complete. Brahms was driven by the death in 1865 of his mother and conceive his Requiem without the liturgy in any church. However, its texts are taken directly from the Lutheran Bible. There are also resources in it that can be used to create German forms and elements (the fugue, the chorus, and the lied). The Requiem's title is well-justified. It is not only a German Requiem but also one of the most German requiems. This monumental and humanist work is based on the counterpoint and rhetoric of Schutz and Bach. But it was born with the universal vocation to comfort those who are suffering, wherever they may be. One of the greatest achievements in sacred music history. This concert is dedicated to Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), the great Hamburg composer. Vienna will be marking his 125th anniversary. Coviran sponsors it.
