In the midst of an audience war, the two news channels CNews and BFMTV tied in December

This is a first over such a long period: CNews and BFMTV are at the top of the news channels, tied with 2.6% audience share in December, the first announced on Monday, citing figures from Médiamétrie. BFMTV remains the leading news channel for the whole of 2023, with 3% audience share, compared to 2.3% for CNews which is placed second on the podium. LCI follows with a 2% audience share, and the public channel Franceinfo brings up the rear (0.8%).

CNews, of which Pascal Praud is the main headliner, has narrowed the gap in recent months, to the point of placing itself as the leading news channel in France over a full week on at least two occasions in December (from 4 to 10 then from 18 to 24), whereas it had never been before in its six years of existence. CNews belongs to the Canal group, itself controlled by Vivendi, the group of billionaire Vincent Bolloré.

Regularly accused by left-wing figures of promoting the ultra-conservative ideas attributed to Vincent Bolloré, CNews was created in 2017, taking over from iTélé. A massive strike took place there in 2016 after Vincent Bolloré took control.
