CES 2024: Volkswagen will install ChatGPT in its production vehicles from the second quarter

(In Las Vegas)

Volkswagen called it Ida. This is the name of its “personal assistant”, the voice of ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence, which the group plans to deploy in its production vehicles from the second quarter of 2024. It will be the first manufacturer to offer this voice application in its consumer vehicles.

Mercedes, BMW and Hyundai also emphasize the services of their personal assistants in their new cars. At CES, the annual high mass of electronics in Las Vegas, all present the latest versions of their virtual companions supposed to answer the many questions of motorists about their journey, the shops sought after, the charging stations but also the play- music lists, programs to entertain the children in the back....

On Monday, Volkswagen therefore presented Ida which responds to voice requests thanks to ChatGPT that Cerence, its technological partner, has developed in its new vehicles. The world number two automobile manufacturer plans to deploy Ida in electric vehicles but also in thermal vehicles from the Volkswagen, Skoda, Cupra and Seat brands.

“Why bring artificial intelligence into all vehicles,” asks Kai Grünitz, director in charge of technological development at Volkswagen. Because VW has always democratized technology for everyone. It’s part of our DNA.”

At his side on stage, an ID7, from the brand's family of electric vehicles, but also the latest version of the Golf which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “Volkswagen will also have the possibility of integrating Chat Pro – the name of the AI application – into vehicles that are already on the road,” specifies Stefan Otmanns, managing director of Cerence, VW's partner in voice recognition.

Car manufacturers are convinced that the services provided by personal assistants like Alexa (Amazon) or Siri (Apple) at home meet the expectations of their customers in their car.

Iqbal Arshad, the technology director of Cerence and Axel Heinrich, the head of innovation at Volkswagen, boarded the ID7 to demonstrate the capabilities of AI. After calling Ida, one of them said he was cold. The assistant immediately warmed up the temperature by two degrees. When the passenger asks to get medicine, Ida offers a list of pharmacies in the area. And when Axel Heinrich asks who makes the best cars, Ida replies that “according to ChatGPT, several companies make quality cars.” Ida is then interrupted by the passenger. Perhaps she would have given the name of Volkswagen's competitors...
