With Wonka, Timothée Chalamet cracks the North American box office

The fantasy film Wonka, starring star actor Timothée Chalamet, made a sensational debut in North American theaters in mid-December, after an already strong start abroad, according to estimates published this Sunday, December 17 by the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.

Nominated for the Golden Globes in the best actor category for Timothée Chalamet, Paul King's film grossed $39 million in the United States and Canada over three days, from Friday to Sunday.

Mischievous in a top hat, Timothée Chalamet plays a younger version of the famous chocolatier Willy Wonka from the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, a character first played by Gene Wilder then Johnny Depp.

Another prequel, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird,” ranked second with $5.8 million in revenue, a feat for a film that has been in theaters for five weeks.

Also nominated for the Golden Globes, in the animated film category, The Boy and the Heron by Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki leaves first place to fall to third, with $5.2 million.

Another Japanese production, the science fiction film “Godzilla Minus One” by Takashi Yamazaki comes in fourth position ($4.9 million), ahead of “Trolls 3”, with $4 million in revenue.

In the rest of the top 10, we find the Disney animated film WISH, Asha and the Lucky Star (3.2 million), Christmas with The Chosen: Holy Night (3 million), Napoleon (2.2 million), “Renaissance: A film by Beyoncé” (2 million) and “Poor Creatures” (1.3 million).
