New EU rules for Gas Pipelines such as Nord Stream 2

For Gas Pipelines such as Nord Stream 2 will apply in the future, new EU rules. The Commission now has more say in such projects. Germany had blocked the text of the law for a long time.

The EU has decided the Revision of the rules for Gas Pipelines from third countries final. Government representatives of the 28 member States confirmed a corresponding legal text of the EU-Parliament in the beginning of April had passed, as the Romanian EU-announced presidency. According to the EU Commission, the new rules will also apply to the German-Russian Nord Stream project 2.

The revised Gas Directive gives the EU Commission more say in such projects. For example, Pipelines from third countries are subject to the rules in the future EU. Accordingly, the production of natural gas and the operation of the line may not lie in a Hand unlike in the past, the Russian state company Gazprom and the Nord Stream Pipeline 2. An operator must allow competitors the use of the line for a fee. For new projects such as Nord Stream, 2 but exceptions to the agreed rules should be possible.

The Federal government had blocked the bill for a long time. In mid-February it finally came to the agreement on the EU level. Thus, Germany as a country in which the Pipeline meets for the first time on the European network will, in the case of Nord Stream 2 continue to play a key role.
