The "Time" magazine has chosen the island of Sylt as one of the 50 most beautiful places in the world. This makes the North Sea island the only travel destination in Germany on the American magazine's list. The kilometers of beaches are highlighted, but also the noble hotels and restaurants on Sylt. "Time" also recognizes the good cycling opportunities and public transport.

The selection is based on suggestions from "an international network of correspondents and contributors," the magazine said. Several media had previously reported.

With even more tourism, which could also result from such a mention, Sylt would definitely have to struggle. For example, the municipality of Sylt recently decided to ban the construction of new holiday apartments. The municipal council voted unanimously for the accommodation concept, it said. This is a clear signal for a balanced cooperation between locals and guests - and for a livable and lovable community.

Mayor Nikolas Häckel (non-party) told the NDR: “We have felt an imbalance between vacation rentals and permanent residences on Sylt for years. Today's decision aims to bring us back into balance. Permanent living is so important because we need people here on site - for the fire brigade, care, in shift work.

After the vote, he posted on Facebook: "This is a great signal to the people of Sylt, but also for sustainable tourism." Now more than 120 development plans are to be adjusted in order to exclude further holiday apartments and to secure permanent living space. That is why jobs should also be created. "Three new staff positions were approved for local development in order to cope with this major task," the mayor continued. The municipality of Sylt includes Westerland, Rantum, Archsum, Keitum, Morsum, Munkmarsch and Tinnum.
