When her family fled Iran, Maryam Blumenthal was still a child, just two years old, and her first stop in Germany was an asylum home. At the age of 13 she came to Hamburg, lived for 16 years in a high-rise building in the problem district of Steilshoop, received Hartz IV.

Hamburg has not been deporting to Iran for years, said Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD). That is why he also supports a nationwide deportation ban. Iran is one of the "most archaic and brutal systems of oppression" in the world. "These unrest in Iran is the worst in many years and we hope it will also be the most impactful," Grote said.
