The PSOE has gathered 2,000 signatures to oppose the relocation of the sewage treatment facility.

Velez-Rubio City Council's Municipal Socialist Group has voiced its opposition to the proposed change in the location of the municipal treatment station and new pumping station. This is considering that a very small area has been selected - only 500m from the center of the city - and they have made a series of claims against the project. These allegations are backed by more than 1,700 signatures from neighbors who have shown their opposition to the project to the PP Government and the Andalusian Government.

The Socialists, who continue to campaign for signatures and now total around 2,000, allege that the Board and the consistory made the decision unilaterally, and that citizens were not informed about it prior to the public presentation.

"The Socialists do not oppose the construction of a new treatment station or pumping station. But we believe it is more appropriate to do it where the existing one is now, three km from the urban centre and not as close to as the new facility is planned," Maria Perez Perez, spokeswoman for PSOE Velez said. She insisted that the public was given "null information" so that they could comment or argue about the project. She disfigured, "Not even an effort has been made in order to achieve maximum consensus and benefit for all citizens of the municipality"

Velez-Rubio's PSOE considers it "unacceptable" and inconvenient, from the technical, economic, and health point of view, to construct the treatment plant (WWTP), and pumping station (EBAR), where it is projected. They support their claims with numerous documents.

Socialist spokeswoman, Judith Levy, defends the idea that the new plant should be built on the same land as the existing one. It is approximately 7.78 hectares. "Since the flood zone covers 2.53 hectares, not even that plot is affected, it leaves 5.25 hectares unaffected. This would make it possible to locate the WWTP. It would be more than 2000 meters away from the nearest part of the city center. Therefore, some pretreatment or dehydration elements would not be required inside a warehouse.

The Socialists point out that the current treatment station has a high-voltage line and could be fitted with a single general collector of gravity. This would eliminate the need for an EBAR lifting station and allow everything to work by gravity. According to the Velez PSOE, if the treatment plant is left on its current site, it would be a significant savings in non-construction, maintenance, and operation as well as the non-expropriation land for the EBAR. The Socialists claim that the new WWTP will not only have an economic impact but also have a visual impact because it is situated next to the highway.

Maria Perez Perez says, "We trust that both Velez-Rubio City Council as well as the Andalusian Government will take into consideration our allegations and the opinions of thousands of neighbors, and rethink the project that, at present, does not report any benefits to the municipality, rather, the opposite."
