Stralsund citizenship votes against gender in administration

According to the will of the citizens of Stralsund (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania), municipal institutions and companies should not use underscores, colons or asterisks when describing gender. On Thursday, 21 city representatives approved a corresponding application by the AfD parliamentary group, 17 voted against.

Under the heading "Consistently stop gender - communication in language that conforms to the rules", the AfD parliamentary group called for the relevant bodies to be instructed to consistently adhere to the guidelines of the Council for German spelling.

In 2021, the Council for German Spelling rejected gendering – for example with an asterisk or an underscore. The institution pointed out that gender-appropriate language is a socio-political task that cannot be solved by spelling rules alone.

The application said that these requirements “determine the oral and written use of language” should be ensured by regulation. Gendering complicates the language and thus excludes it, it was said in justification.

The AfD parliamentary group has six MPs in the citizenship. The strongest parliamentary group is the CDU/FDP parliamentary group with eleven seats, followed by Die Linke/SPD (nine), the Bürger für Stralsund (eight) and Bündnis90/Die Grünen/Die Party (seven).

In recent months, several cases in which members of other parties have voted with the AfD have triggered public and internal party discussions. Among other things, the SPD in Hildburghausen (Thuringia) supported the voting procedure against the mayor of the left together with the AfD. In the Thuringian state parliament, the CDU, FDP and AfD passed an amendment to the arcade law.
