SPD candidate is clearly ahead in the mayoral election in Cottbus

In the mayoral election in Cottbus, the SPD candidate Tobias Schick is well ahead of the AfD candidate Lars Schieske after counting three quarters of the votes. According to the election officer, 41-year-old Schick came out on top of 80 of 106 counted areas with 65.8 percent in the runoff election on Sunday, ahead of Schieske, who got 34.2 percent.

Schieske congratulated Schick on the probable win on Sunday evening. The election was eagerly awaited because it also involves the question of whether the AfD will have a mayor for the first time in Germany or not. Around 79,000 Cottbus residents were called to vote. In the first round of voting, Schick got 31.8 percent and Schieske 26.4 percent. The CDU, Greens, Left and FDP then promised Schick their support for the runoff.

The still incumbent CDU Mayor Holger Kelch did not appear for health reasons. His successor will take office on November 30th. The second largest city in Brandenburg is facing a new structural change. According to the Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution, it is the focus of right-wing extremism in the state.
