Rudi Völler honored for his life's work

Rudi Völler received the "Sport Bild" award 2022 for his life's work. The 62-year-old soccer world champion from 1990 received his award from Europe's largest sports magazine in Hamburg's Fischauktionshalle. The long-time professional and later sports director and managing director of the Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen was one of around 700 guests from sports, entertainment, politics, business and media in the Hanseatic city at the 20th edition of the award ceremony for "outstanding achievements" in sports.

Völler, also known as "Tante Käthe", started his professional career in 1977 at Kickers Offenbach and played for 1860 Munich, Werder Bremen, AS Rom and Olympique Marseille. He won the Champions League with the French in 1993.

In 1994, Völler came to Bayer Leverkusen, where he held several positions, including as an interim coach, until the summer. Völler played a total of 90 times for the German national team, with which he won the 1990 World Cup in Rome. As team boss, he finished second with the DFB team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Malaika Mihambo was honored as "Star of the Year". The Olympic long jump champion defended her world championship title at the competitions in the USA and most recently came second at the European Championships in Munich. Shortly before, Mihambo had just survived a corona infection.

Eintracht Frankfurt received the award for “Team of the Year” after their surprising triumph in the Europa League. It was the first win by a German team in this competition in 25 years. On the way to the title, Eintracht first defeated FC Barcelona and then defeated Glasgow Rangers in the final.

Malaika Mihambo won her next gold medal at the World Championships in Eugene. With 7.12 m, Germany's Sportswoman of the Year successfully defended her title in the long jump.
