Polls see the SPD in Lower Saxony just ahead of the CDU

Two polls put Prime Minister Stephan Weil's SPD in the lead in the state elections in Lower Saxony. According to the surveys published on Tuesday evening and Wednesday, the CDU of challenger Bernd Althusmann took second place with a gap of three to four percentage points. The Greens follow ahead of the AfD and FDP, the Left is still below the five percent hurdle. The election will take place on October 10, 2022.

The Institute Infratest dimap located the SPD at 31 percent on Wednesday - one point more than at the beginning of July. The CDU remained unchanged at 27 percent. The Greens lost three points to 19 percent, while the AfD improved one point to seven percent and the FDP lost one point to six percent. The left would still not be represented in the Hanover state parliament with three percent.

According to the Forsa Institute, the SPD was one point weaker at 29 percent compared to the end of June, while the CDU remained unchanged at 26 percent. For the Greens, 22 percent were given without changes. The AfD gained one point to eight percent, while the FDP and the Left remained unchanged at six and three percent, respectively.

Infratest dimap surveyed 1,169 voters in Lower Saxony for the Norddeutscher Rundfunk from Wednesday last week to Monday. The Forsa survey for Lower Saxony daily newspapers was based on a survey of around 2,000 eligible voters in the northern German state from August 16th to 23rd.

Lower Saxony is currently governed by a grand coalition of SPD and CDU under Prime Minister Weil, in which Althusmann is Economics Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. According to the polls, a continuation of the red-black coalition would be possible, but majorities also have a red-green and a black-green alliance.
