Now Xi Jinping's loss of reality is taking revenge

For the first time in decades, the Chinese nationwide are turning against the dictatorship. On the streets of many large cities, they are not only demonstrating against the country's radical zero-corona policy, but also demanding the end of the communist party and chanting "Down with Xi Jinping".

There have been massive protests against the corona measures in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang. "End the lockdown," cried the crowds in the provincial capital. The number of infections has recently increased again in the People's Republic.

In the authoritarian country, this is a one-off event that apparently surprised the police and their commanders. On Saturday, the officials with their batons were largely inactive. By Sunday it was too late to stop the calls for freedom from erupting in many places. Xi Jinping, so sure of his power, is weakened after this weekend.

It had originally been expected that the strict pandemic policy would have an expiration date. With his crackdown on every corona outbreak in the country, the president wanted to demonstrate in the run-up to the party congress how well he had China under control. But even after he had himself proclaimed ruler for life in the Great Hall of the People, he continued his tough Corona course. He even described the measures as “necessary”. To this day, entire residential areas and cities are sealed off if infections are registered somewhere.

This loss of reality is now taking its revenge twice. The zero-corona policy has long since failed. Sunday saw a record number of more than 39,000 new infections for the fourth day in a row. The merciless locking up of people is meanwhile slowing down the Chinese economy. But with the protests, Xi is now getting his personal acknowledgment, after all he stands for the country's corona strategy.

People don't want him anymore - and tell him so straight to his face just six weeks after his coronation mass. For this they accept being arrested and beaten up. Xi will respond to this shame with even more repression. But this weekend showed that the Chinese are willing to risk ever more for freedom.
