Israel needs cool heads now

Violence in Israel continues. On Sunday morning, two gunmen tried to enter the country across the Syrian border, but Israeli soldiers were able to repel the attack. During the night, Palestinians in the West Bank made two attempted attacks. In what is believed to be an act of revenge, Palestinian property was attacked and several cars were torched.

After two attacks on Friday and Saturday that left seven dead and several injured, the Israeli government issued the highest terror alert level. A 21-year-old ambushed people praying in a synagogue on Friday evening and shot seven people. Another gunman, just 13 years old, shot at passers-by in Jerusalem on Saturday, seriously injuring two of them.

Israel announced new counter-terrorism measures, including relaxation of gun laws, in the wake of the recent attacks. The driving factor is Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, explains Middle East correspondent Christine Kensche, an ultra-right populist politician.

The shock in Israel runs deep. It is more than understandable that effective answers to the terror are now being sought. However, some of the planned measures are not effective, quite the opposite. It is already practice that the family houses are demolished by terrorists. This is supposed to deter potential perpetrators from attacks. Now the government wants to withdraw welfare and healthcare benefits for the relatives of terrorists (if they are Israeli citizens or residents of East Jerusalem with special status). The withdrawal of citizenship from relatives is also being discussed. The family should be punished collectively. That satisfies a thirst for revenge, but is neither legally nor morally justifiable.

Even the actual benefit is disputed. In 2005, an Israeli military committee found that the effectiveness of the home demolition policy as a deterrent was questionable and that it did more harm than good by inciting hatred. As a result, the practice was stopped for a while - until the next serious attack. The equation "more punishment = more deterrence" doesn't work. What is needed now are cool heads that decide on targeted countermeasures, not heated populism. In any case, kinship is not a solution.
