"Chancen-Residenzrecht" should apply for 18 instead of 12 months

Before the vote on the so-called right of residence for long-term foreigners only tolerated in Germany, the responsible Bundestag committee changed the bill in essential points. As Parliament announced on Wednesday, the new status should apply for 18 months instead of 12 as originally planned. The interior committee has also pushed back the deadline. As a result, more people could benefit from the right of residence.

The regulation now stipulates that foreigners who have been living in Germany for five years on October 31st of this year, but only have the status of a toleration, should be given the opportunity to stay. During this time, they should be given the opportunity to collect the requirements for a permanent right of residence. This includes securing your livelihood, knowledge of German and proof of identity. January 1 of this year was originally planned as the deadline.

On Friday, the Bundestag will finally discuss the law of the traffic light coalition, a majority is considered likely. According to the federal government, almost 137,000 people would have been affected by a regulation with the originally planned deadline. With the postponement of the deadline by ten months, there should be more.

The draft law also provides for simplifications in the right to stay regardless of the reference date and the waiver of language skills for family reunification to join skilled workers in Germany. Provisions are also planned that should lead to more deportations. Among other things, the arrangement of detention pending deportation should be made easier.
