After the 80th ordinance, Hamburg also relies on personal responsibility

The first "Ordinance to contain the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg" came into force on April 2, 2020 - almost three years ago. 79 more of these containment ordinances were to follow. The validity of the 80th edition ends on Tuesday, i.e. at the turn of the month. There shouldn't be any more.

This step is particularly visible to the public in local public transport, because the obligation to wear a medical mask - and even a mouth and nose protector - is completely eliminated. In addition, the separation obligation is deleted. Anyone who has a positive rapid corona test should call in sick and listen to the recommendations of their family doctor, but nobody has to go into quarantine at home anymore. Likewise, if the rapid test is positive, there is no longer any obligation to carry out a confirmatory PCR test.

In medical facilities such as practices, hospitals or nursing homes, the current restrictions with mask and test requirements continue to apply, because the Federal Infection Protection Act applies there, over which the federal states have no influence.

"After almost three years of the pandemic, we are now in a new phase in which we are primarily relying on the personal responsibility of the people of Hamburg. This means that everyone can decide for themselves when it makes sense to wear a mask. In addition, the following does not only apply to infections with the corona virus: Anyone who is ill stays at home,” said Senator for Health Melanie Schlotzhauer (SPD).

But she also made it clear that the corona virus had not disappeared. “Vaccination remains the best protection against a serious illness. In places where space is tight or where a large number of people come together, wearing a mask helps to significantly reduce the risk of infection," said the senator. The infection process will continue to be closely monitored by the authorities "in order to be able to react accordingly if the situation changes."
