Acadia today: “For us, attachment to the French language is of primary importance”

This article is taken from the special issue of Le Figaro “D’Est en Ouest – Vivre au Canada”, available on the Figaro Store.

How to define Acadia in 2023?

In political terms, Acadia represents the French-speaking communities of the four Atlantic Provinces of Canada, but it is more than that. If it is rooted in history and claims its identity within the Acadian Canadian Francophonie, the SNA places more and more emphasis on the idea of a community of destiny. Today's Acadia aims to bring together all those who want to link their destiny to it. It is still a land that welcomes immigrants from all backgrounds and these newcomers who choose to do so can thus join the Acadian community.

How can we promote its integration into Acadia?

Acadian society is very open and warm to all those who have the desire to contribute and find a place for themselves in order to build a better future. For us, attachment to the French language is of primary importance. We fight for our schools, to maintain a cultural and economic life in French, but language is not the only criterion for defining ourselves as a people. Our common goal is to participate in a community in which members come together around living together. Most of our cities are on a human scale and for people to quickly enjoy living there, they must highlight their curiosity and open-mindedness when settling in to socialize.

What about the Acadian cultural phenomenon?

We have long had Acadian artists who succeeded on the international scene by hiding their origins, like Roch Voisine at the start of his career. We are now in an inverse situation where the Acadian “accent” appeals and piques interest. By listening to P'tit Béliveau, Lisa Leblanc or Radio Radio or by reading new up-and-coming Acadian writers, we realize that popular Acadian language is rich in its different “speaks” and its influences. Today the world is thirsty to learn what Acadia has to offer, it is a recent development of which we are very proud.
