Believers with face masks return to the al-Aqsa mosque

Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem early Sunday morning, reopened after having been closed for 2.5 months because of coronapandemien.

Al-Aqsa mosque is islam's tredjehelligste place after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

A reporter from the AFP news agency tells that the faithful wearing face masks have been allowed to enter the mosque early Sunday morning to the day's first prayers.

During the song 'God is greatest, we will protect al-Aqsa mosque with our souls and blood,' was the group of believers welcomed by the mosque's director, Omar al-Kiswani, who thanked them for their patience.

Al-Aqsa mosque, closed its doors 15. march in an attempt to limit the infection with the corona virus.

Muslims believe that the prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven from the temple courtyard - known as the Haram al-Sharif by muslims and the square has often been a focal point in the israeli-palestinian conflict.

the temple of god is also sacred for jews, who believe that it is the location of two biblical temples, one of which was destroyed in the year 70.

Al-Aqsa mosque is in east Jerusalem which has been occupied by Israel since June 1967 six-day.

Jerusalem contains some of the most sacred places for both muslims, christians and jews. It is - in addition to the al-Aqsa mosque and the temple of god - the western wall, Bethesda Dam and Calvary.

On the first day of Eid al-fitr-the feast earlier in may, scuffles erupted between israeli police and palestinians, as believers tried to break through the barriers to get into the temple of god.

It is Jordan, which formally has the oversight of the sanctuary. Jordan controlled the west bank, including east Jerusalem until the Israeli occupation in 1967.

Since the number of coronavirustilfælde continue to decline, both Israel and the palestinian territories have begun to ease restrictions in recent days.
