XV of France: “The refereeing was not with us but we were too imprecise”, admits Bielle-Biarrey after the elimination against South Africa

The players of the French XV are still stunned following their brutal elimination against the Springboks on Sunday at the Stade de France (28-29), in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. This is particularly the case of young winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey (20 years old), the player most used by Fabien Galthié during this World Cup with Damian Penaud, who returned to this immense disillusionment in the columns of L'Equipe, without however, overwhelm the refereeing of the match.

“It wasn't denial, but a little nonetheless. We told ourselves that it wasn't possible. It was obviously heavy,” confided the Bordeaux resident. “We all had the goal of going as far as possible, and we knew we had three finals to play. Unfortunately, we lost the first one. I think we really had the means to go all the way. The group is aware that it missed a huge opportunity to make history in France. Everyone was disgusted and dejected,” added the 20-year-old.

“The Springboks are a huge team, one of the best in the world, but we were not overwhelmed. We were equal, or even better. There was more than room to pass but we made two or three mistakes which cost us as many tries in the first half. They played their game very well too. We will have to use this match.”

The UBB winger also returned to the controversy sparked by the contentious refereeing decisions of New Zealand referee BenO'Keefe, who was notably targeted by Blues captain Antoine Dupont at the end of the match. “We debriefed him a little,” explains Bielle-Biarrey. It's true that some situations do not work out in our favor. But it is not over two or three small actions that we lose the match. The refereeing was not with us but we were too imprecise in certain areas. It may be the last straw, but the vase was already full.”
