XV of France: Meafou dreams of the next Tournament and will give everything if he has “the chance to play with this blue jersey”

The second line of Australian origin from Stade Toulousain Emmanuel Meafou, now eligible for the French team, hopes to be called up by coach Fabien Galthié to compete in the 2024 Six Nations Rugby Tournament, which will begin in February. “There is still time before the announcement,” he recalled Thursday at a press conference in Toulouse before the reception of Toulon on Saturday at the Stadium during the 10th day of Top 14.

“I try not to think about it too much because there are still a few weeks, a few matches to play. There is always a risk of injury,” added the 25-year-old. “I had the (French) passport. In terms of paperwork, everything is done. I hope to be chosen in the group of 42 (players for the Tournament).” Born in New Zealand before emigrating to Australia, Meafou has always proclaimed his intention to defend the colors of France, the country which gave him his chance at the highest level.

Arriving at the end of 2018 in Toulouse, the colossus (2.03 m, 145 kg) was unable to participate in the World Cup this year with the Blues, failing to meet the eligibility criteria imposed by World Rugby. This is now the case and even if his first steps in the French team are eagerly awaited due to his rare profile, the powerful second row believes he has not changed his status.

“I try to stay myself, both in my game and off the field,” he said. I will give everything if I have the chance to play in this blue jersey. (...) I still have a lot to work on,” he admitted. “I can give a lot more, even on my actions with the ball in my hands. I have to manage to keep my strength from the first to the last minute.”

Stade Toulousain, currently 6th in the Top 14, will also be able to count on the return of Julien Marchand against Toulon, 2nd. The international hooker has not played since the World Cup opener against New Zealand in early September after injuring his thigh and undergoing minor knee surgery. “He will quickly want to show that we can count on him and that competition will resume at the position,” said Toulouse assistant forward coach Virgile Lacombe.
