WRC: Lappi close to victory, Fourmaux second during the Swedish rally

The Finnish Esapekka Lappi (Hyundai) came closer to victory at the end of the third day of the Swedish rally where he took advantage of the accident of Takamoto Katsuta (Toyota) to take the lead ahead of the Frenchman Adrien Fourmaux (M-Sport/Ford).

Leader since Friday evening and neck and neck with Katsuta after the first special of the day (SS9), less than a second separating the two drivers, Lappi benefited from the Japanese going off the road in SS10, who found himself stuck in a wall of snow and saw his hopes of success dashed. From there, the 33-year-old Finn, who was more than a minute and a half ahead of Fourmaux, took fewer risks and was content to manage his significant lead to glimpse the second victory of his career in WRC after the 2017 Rally Finland.

Behind him, Fourmaux had a great day at the wheel of his Puma to heroically resist British world vice-champion Elfyn Evans (Toyota). The Frenchman, back this year in the premier category after a season in WRC2, won the fourth scratch of his career in WRC by being the fastest on SS11. With three stages remaining in the race, the Northerner is 16.7 seconds ahead of the Welshman and could secure the first podium of his WRC career.

The Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), leader of the world championship, made a good comeback on Saturday after suffering a lot on Friday when he had to open the road in difficult conditions. Eleventh at the start of the day, he used his experience to return to fourth position after being the fastest during the last three stages of the day.

The reigning Finnish double world champion Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota) and the Estonian Ott Tänak (Hyundai), double winner of the event (2019, 2023), who had to retire on Friday, returned for honor on Saturday and made a scratch each. They will try to collect as many points as possible on Sunday to alleviate their disappointment.

Three special stages, including the Power Stage, representing a total of 61.08 km, are on the program for Sunday on the final day of the Swedish Rally, the only round of the season contested on snow.
