Aurélien Sanchez, first French winner of the Barkley last year in Tennessee, in the United States, abandoned the 2024 edition on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, announced the organization of this legendary ultra-race. trail.
The 33-year-old runner stopped at the third of five loops -- around 160 km and 20,000 m of elevation gain in total -- to be completed in less than 12 hours each, or risk being eliminated.

“I don’t know how I did last year,” he declared, according to comments relayed on X (ex-Twitter) by one of the Barkley organizers, Keith Dunn.
An engineer in the automobile industry based in Toulouse, Sanchez became in 2023 the first Frenchman to win the race, considered one of the most difficult in the world. Since its first edition in 1986, only 17 runners have completed it.
“It’s never a foregone conclusion. I managed to finish it once, but I can't pretend to finish it every year,” he recently told AFP.
According to Keith Dunn, two French people are still in the race, Sébastien Raichon and Maxime Gauduin, notably in the company of a woman, the British Jasmin Paris, and the American John Kelly, who has already completed the Barkley twice.
