“They have no place in the Champions League”, “desperately mediocre”, “unacceptable”: the English press is unleashed on Manchester United

Last in Group A with only four points on the clock and defeated Tuesday evening at Old Trafford by Bayern Munich (1-0), Manchester United are (already) eliminated from the Champions League. A pitiful performance which is hardly of the standard of the most successful club in England, three times winner of the competition. This Wednesday, the English press is unleashed on the Red Devils. The Daily Mail opens the hostilities by noting the fact that the Mancuniens “have no place in this competition”, specifying that they are simply “not good enough, authors of an anemic performance, uninspired and desperately mediocre” and that “the most supported club in England can no longer be counted among the aristocrats of European football”.

For its part, the Daily Mirror highlights the “bad luck” of Manchester United, which “was not helped by the absences of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, as well as by the injuries during the match to Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw”, before insisting that “it is simply unacceptable for a United manager to finish last in his group, behind Copenhagen and Galatasaray”. The Mirror adds another layer by recalling that the residents of Old Trafford are also struggling in the Premier League, occupying “sixth place and recently humiliated by Bournemouth at home (3-0 last weekend)”. These numerous disappointments greatly weaken coach Erik ten Hag, whose “position is increasingly uncertain”.

The Telegraph focuses on the performance of former Tottenham player Harry Kane, who is currently in the heyday of Bayern and who knows Man United very well, where he was once announced last summer. The British media claims that the Red Devils are “haunted by the sight of “what they could have been” with the top scorer in the history of the English selection at the forefront of their attack. Finally, The Sun deplores that the Mancunian club “has lost its splendor and is no longer respected on a European scale”. Following Kingsley Coman's winning goal, Munich supporters at Old Trafford mocked Manchester United by singing the famous English song "Football's Coming Home" while the Red Devils signed another "undesirable performance in Champions League".
