Roland-Garros 2023: Holger Rune overcomes Francisco Cerundolo and joins Casper Ruud in the quarters

The Danish prodigy Holger Rune, 6th in the world and one of the main outsiders of the tournament, was put in great difficulty on Monday by the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo (23rd) whom he finally beat in the super tie break of the fifth set to find Casper Ruud ( 4th) in the quarter-finals.

Rune won 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (10/7) after 3:59 of a fierce fight, during which he made many mistakes direct (73 over the whole match) and seemed in physical difficulty to the point of being given a remedy by the doctor in the middle of the fourth set.

His opponent, Cerundolo, who reached the knockout stages at this year's French Open for the first time in his career, had three break points to come away 5-3 serve to follow in the deciding set.

The Argentinian even served for the match at 5-4 and let his opponent come back... but it was Rune who won.

The 20-year-old Dane has established himself in the world elite, notably by winning the Masters 1000 in Paris last year with a victory in the final against Novak Djokovic. Last year, for his first appearance at Roland-Garros, he reached the quarters, his best result to date in a Grand Slam.

In Australia at the start of the year, he was eliminated in the round of 16 after a Homeric match against Russian Andrey Rublev.

In Paris, Rune presents himself as one of the main outsiders against the big favorites Carlos Alcaraz (world No.1) and Novak Djokovic (3rd).

Since the start of the season on clay, he has notably played in two Masters 1000 finals, in Monte-Carlo and Rome, where he was beaten respectively by Rublev and Medvedev, two players who enjoyed, like him, the status of outsider in Paris but who have already been eliminated.
