Real Madrid: "It's time for me to know another story", announces a moved Benzema

Karim Benzema and Real Madrid, it's over. Definitively. The Spanish club held an “institutional act of tribute and farewell” on Tuesday in honor of their French striker, who leaves after 14 seasons in Madrid. Dozens of people, including Benzema's teammates, attended the ceremony which lasted about twenty minutes this afternoon.

A tribute video was broadcast before Florentino Pérez, historic president of Real, made a speech. It was "a very difficult day" for the 76-year-old manager, who praised "the magic of a footballer like Karim" under the eyes of Thibaut Courtois, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez.

“You have become one of the best of all time. We've seen you do amazing things with our jersey all over the world. And that will never be forgotten by any Madridista. We are all very proud of you”, thanked Pérez, before giving the floor to Benzema.

The former Lyonnais, who arrived at Real at 21, remembered his meeting with Pérez. “I said to myself that he was the man who brought Ronaldo and Zidane,” laughed Benzema, who says he “savoured like a child” each victory and each of the 25 trophies he won in Madrid.

“It is difficult to speak with so many emotions, but I wanted to thank Real Madrid and my teammates, confided the Ballon d'Or 2022. It has been a beautiful path in my life. I had the chance to realize my childhood dream.” Without saying more about his future, Benzema said it was 'time for me to leave and know another story'. "I signed in Madrid and I wanted to retire here, but it didn't happen like that," he quietly regretted.

Benzema, 35, is about to sign a huge three-year contract with Saudi club Al-Ittihad. He would find in this country his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, player of Al-Nassr and top scorer in the history of Real (450 goals) ahead of … Benzema (354). The six-time Ballon d'Or Lionel Messi, out of contract with PSG, is also close to joining Saudi Arabia.
