"Official Announcement: Benzema." It is with this laconic title that Real Madrid announced, on Sunday in a press release, the departure of Karim Benzema after 14 seasons at the Spanish club. The French striker, Ballon d'Or 2022, will not extend his contract which expires on June 30. An earthquake in Madrid, where Benzema (35) wore the captain's armband.
"Real Madrid CF and our captain Karim Benzema have agreed to put an end to his brilliant and unforgettable period as a player for our club," wrote Real Madrid in a press release published a few hours before the last La Liga match against Barcelona. Athletic Club (6:30 p.m.), where Benzema is expected to receive a standing ovation from the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Benzema joined Real in 2009 after hatching at Olympique Lyonnais, his training club. Despite fragile first seasons, the former Blues striker ended up establishing himself as the holder, and even the owner of a club where he won 5 Champions Leagues. Better: with 25 trophies in total, he is the most successful player in the history of Real along with Marcelo.
Benzema "was a fundamental player in this golden period of our history", praises Real Madrid which "wishes to show its recognition and affection to the one who is already one of our greatest legends". The Frenchman is the 5th most capped player in the history of the Merengue (646 matches) and the only foreigner in the top 10. He is also the 2nd top scorer for the Casa Blanca (352 achievements).

Real announces to pay him a final tribute Tuesday, June 6 at noon, where will be held in Madrid “an institutional act of homage and farewell in the presence of our president Florentino Pérez”.
