Qatari Nasser al-Attiyah, five-time winner of the Dakar in cars (2011, 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023) will join the Dacia rally-raid team from 2024, the car manufacturer announced on Tuesday.
He will officially race with the subsidiary brand of the Renault group from the test phases in 2024 and will then take to the tracks of the Dakar and the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) from 2025, alongside Sébastien Loeb and Cristina Gutiérrez Herrero, we can read in a press release.
“From 2024, the 3 crews will test a prototype of the brand, running on synthetic fuel, on the tracks of the Morocco rally. A common goal: to win the Dakar!”, adds the text.
The commitment of the fifty-year-old (52 years old), the latest winner of the legendary rally-raid, with Dacia also concerns his co-driver since 2015, the Frenchman Mathieu Baumel, who will remain at his side in this new team.
For the 2024 edition of the Dakar, run from January 5 to 19 in Saudi Arabia, the duo is already involved with the British Pro-Drive (just like Sébastien Loeb and his Belgian co-driver Fabian Lurquin) after seven seasons spent with the Japanese manufacturer Toyota.
Since his first Dakar contested anonymously, and finished in 10th place in 2004 in Senegal at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Pajero, Al-Attiyah has won five times, for three different manufacturers: first Volkswagen (2011 ), then Mini (2015) and therefore Toyota (2019, 2022 and 2023). And he also drove for BMW and Hummer. Al-Attiyah is also a five-time winner of the Cross-Country Rally World Cup and a two-time winner of the World Rally Raid Championship.
