Premier League: billionaire Jim Ratcliffe officially takes a stake in Manchester United

The entry of British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, boss of the petrochemical giant Inéos, into the capital of Manchester United has been officially approved, the English club announced on Tuesday.

The 71-year-old businessman “finalized the acquisition” of 25% of the club’s shares, according to the terms of the agreement reached, “after having satisfied all the conditions, including the approvals of the English federation and the Premier League,” said a press release.

Ratcliffe invested an additional $200 million (around 185 million euros) to increase its equity portfolio, bringing its commitment to “around 27.7%”, it is specified.

It should also put an additional 100 million (92 million euros) by December 31, 2024, an envelope intended for “future investments in the infrastructure of Old Trafford”, the Red Devils stadium. This would then bring its commitment to 28.9%.

“Becoming a co-owner of Manchester United is a great honor and comes with great responsibility,” commented Ratcliff, quoted in the press release.

Tuesday's outcome “marks the completion of the transaction, but it is only the start of our journey to return Manchester United to the pinnacle of English, European and world football, with world-class facilities for our supporters. The work to achieve these objectives will accelerate from today,” he added.

This marks the end of a long series that began in November 2022 when the Glazer family, American owner of the famous English team, announced that they were studying a total or partial sale of the club.

Ratcliffe faced competition from Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), but he withdrew from the race in October 2023.

A supporter of the Red Devils since his childhood, the founder of the Inéos group, also owner of OGC Nice (French L1) and Lausanne (Swiss championship), will also be responsible for the sporting operations of the club with twenty English championship titles.
