Northampton-Toulon: George Furbank precious, the RCT is scuttled... the tops and flops

Tops

Author of a double this evening (29th, 59th), the Northampton fullback offered victory to his team this evening against the RCT (22-19). Excellent under high balls and in his kicking game, with several nice touches found, he was also decisive in defense with a saving return in front of Leicester Fainga'anuku (69th) who came very close to recovering the ball close to the English line. Aged 27, he was also a benchmark within the very young Saints back line (only player over 24) and assumed his role by not making any mistakes. The English three-quarter line had fun this Friday evening.

Discreet like all their teammates in the first period, Melvyn Jaminet, Charles Ollivon and Gabin Villière were able to prove decisive in giving hope to Pierre Mignoni's men. If they failed to prevent the defeat of the Reds and Blacks, Toulon's awakening came from them. By scoring his first try with the RCT in the corner in the 59th minute, Melvyn Jaminet gave the advantage to his team which came from nowhere. By hitting a drop from almost 40 meters a few moments later, he even gave his team a four-point lead. Gabin Villière and Charles Ollivon showed enormous activity to get their team back on track.

Flops

This is certainly the worst 40 minutes of the RCT this season. Dominated in all sectors, Toulon suffered and could be fortunate to only be trailing by 7 points at half-time. Between an amorphous and powerless attack, a key disrupted by Jack Singleton who missed 3 shots and a lack of reaction, we were afraid that the Toulonnais would have a nightmarish evening. Especially since the Saints were very sharp and easy when they decided to accelerate. The awakening took place in the second half but it was not enough.

Toulon had done the hard part. After an almost catastrophic first half at the RCT, Pierre Mignoni's men managed to come back and even take a four-point lead over the Saints. There were only four minutes left to go, relying on a fairly solid defense this evening. But on the same action, both players made mistakes including a largely avoidable voluntary forward from Jérémy Sinzelle. By leaving their partner at 13 against 15 to finish the match, they almost buried Toulon's chances of victory and annihilated all the efforts of their partners. What a shame for the RCT.
