NFL: Jalen Hurts becomes the highest paid player in history

Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles became the highest-paid player in league history after the quarterback agreed to a five-year, $255 million contract extension, the club announced Monday.

The contract includes the first non-tradeable clause in Eagles franchise history and $179 million guaranteed, including $110 million upon signing the contract. Hurts' average salary will be $51 million per season.

Picked in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Hurts quickly established himself as a dual-threat quarterback capable of beating teams by throwing and running the ball.

Last season, Hurts had 22 touchdowns and ran for 13 more, taking the Eagles to the Super Bowl where they lost 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs managed by Patrick Mahomes. Hurts' contract is the second-biggest ever by money, behind Mahomes who signed a 10-year, $450m contract extension in 2020.
