MMA: UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones undergoes elbow surgery

MMA fighter Jon Jones, UFC heavyweight champion, currently recovering from a pectoral injury, has undergone surgery on his left elbow, he announced Tuesday on Instagram. The 36-year-old American tore a pectoral muscle last October, forcing him to abandon his title defense against compatriot Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 (November 2023).

In a video posted to Instagram, Jones said he used his recovery period to "kill two birds with one stone" and also treat his elbow.

“We had a two-hour surgery to reduce some bone spurs. The good news is the healing process is about 10 weeks, and I'm out for months anyway because of this pec surgery,” Jones said. “So I figured I was going to kill two birds with one stone and take care of this elbow once and for all.” “Sometimes you have to take a small step back to move forward, and I'm patient. I’ll be back,” added Jones, who said he was “on the road to recovery.”

Considered one of the best MMA fighters of all time, Jones is a former UFC light heavyweight champion who recently moved up to the heavyweight division. For his return after three years of absence, he won the belt by beating the Frenchman Ciryl Gane. The UFC interim heavyweight title is currently held by Briton Tom Aspinall.
