Lyon supporters have been fantasizing about Karim Benzema returning home for several years. Born in Lyon and trained at OL, the French striker (36 years old) left his homeland in 2009 for Real Madrid, from which he left last summer for the Saudi club Al-Ittihad. After a promising start, Benzema had some difficult matches and was not spared by the Saudi press. His recent late return from vacation didn't help matters.
A departure this winter can no longer be completely ruled out. As revealed by the renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano and confirmed by RMC Sport, Olympique Lyonnais has advanced its pawns regarding a possible return of Benzema. The Eagle Football company, owner of OL and chaired by John Textor, reportedly maintains good relations with Saudi Arabia. However, two obstacles remain.

The first is that Saudi Arabia has made Benzema, Ballon d’Or 2022, one of the stars of its championship. Seeing him leave already would be a bad publicity stunt. The second is the financial aspect. Benzema would have to accept a huge pay cut to return to Europe, and even more so to Lyon, 16th in Ligue 1 and in the fight to stay.
