Ligue 2: Saint-Étienne brings down Laval and returns to the top 5

The very good operation of the Greens. Monday evening, AS Saint-Étienne won 1-0 on the lawn of the Laval leader at the end of the 11th day of Ligue 2, offering themselves, thanks to their scorer Ibrahim Sissoko, a ninth match without defeat.

In the standings, with 21 points, the Greens regain their fifth place once occupied by Rodez. They are mainly back at the level of Grenoble (4th) and are only one point behind Auxerre (3rd). Laval, which had six victories in a row, remains leader (25 points) but sees its pursuers getting closer.

Under intense rain, the two best defenses in the championship fought an open match, in a Francis-Le Basser stadium which had not suffered defeat for more than six months, on April 8 during the 30th day of the season last.

In the 10th minute, a loss of ball in the Saint-Etienne area by Lamine Fomba pressed by Amin Cherni gave Laval a first big opportunity, cleared for a corner by Léo Pétrot.

Three minutes later, it was the Greens who took the score. Launched deep and on the edge of offside by Dennis Appiah, Ibrahim Sissoko deceives Laval goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa with a low shot at the near post.

The ex-Sochalien, recruited to compensate for the departure of Jean-Philippe Krasso, scored his 7th goal of the season. In the 43rd minute, Samassa stood out by diverting a shot on target from Mathieu Cafaro to the ground at the conclusion of a slalom from Aymen Moueffek. In the 45th minute, his right post replaced him with another cross attempt from Cafaro.

In the Saint-Etienne goals, Gautier Larsonneur relieves his defenders by punching out a dangerous cross from Anthony Gonçalves (39th), then stopping a header from Cherni (56th) or a cross from Thibaut Vargas (81st) or a corner of the same (89th). In the 69th minute, Tango's top scorer this season, Malik Tchokounté, alone in the area, was found by Cherni but missed his recovery. Neither he nor his teammates will find the opening.

Laval will travel to Amiens (10th) on Saturday for the 12th day, while Saint-Étienne will host in a staggered match next Monday another direct competitor for the climb, Angers, 2nd with 23 points.
