Supporters who left to support Olympique de Marseille in Clermont on Saturday evening for the 24th day of Ligue 1 were attacked during their return journey. “The 8 buses of Marseille supporters, who were traveling back on the A47 towards Lyon, were the subject this Sunday March 3 around 1:30 a.m. of heavy projectile jets from a bridge overlooking the motorway near Saint-Etienne », Explains the Loire prefecture in a press release.
The Marseille supporters then allegedly got out of the buses and “damaged a vehicle” and injured its driver, before leaving in the direction of Marseille. This motorist was injured in the face and transported by firefighters to the Saint-Etienne University Hospital, said police sources, who reported that a “large number” of supporters had gotten off the buses, some armed with baseball bats.
When they arrived, the police found pieces of rubble, mortars and broken windows, but the coaches had left.
The police caught up with them further away, carried out identity checks but did not make any arrests at this stage, according to another police source.
The Saint-Etienne public prosecutor's office told AFP that it had opened two separate investigations, one for violence with weapons in meetings with premeditation, concerning the throwing of projectiles, the other for degradation in meetings with weapons, for reprisals.
Alexandre Rochatte, prefect of the Loire, speaks of “serious unacceptable incidents” which could have had “dramatic consequences”.
