Liga: Real Madrid denounces the “negligence” of a referee after racist insults against Vinicius

In a press release published Monday evening, Real Madrid denounced the "serious insults" against its player, Vinicius Junior, during Madrid's victory on the Osasuna lawn last Saturday (2-4) as part of the 29th day of La Liga. Real announced that it was “filing a complaint with the disciplinary committee of the Spanish Football Federation against the match referee, Juan Martínez Munuera, due to negligence in the drafting of his report”.

The Madrid club accuses the referee of having “deliberately and voluntarily omitted the insults and degrading cries directed on several occasions” against Vinicius, despite “the insistent warnings of our players at the very moment they were occurring”. Vinicius scored twice in this match to guide the Merengue to victory, and received a yellow card for contesting the refereeing decisions.

Real adds that it has filed another complaint, this time “concerning the aforementioned insults and degrading cries so that their perpetrators can be identified and punished by the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in the sport".

Vinicius, a 23-year-old Brazilian striker, himself denounced racist mockery against him by supporters of rival club Atlético de Madrid before a match against Inter Milan in the Champions League last week. The supporters in question had called him a “chimpanzee”. “I have never seen a player as targeted as Vinicius,” lamented his coach Carlo Ancelotti. Real are leaders of La Liga and will face Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
