Kevin Gameiro, emblematic striker of Strasbourg (L1), announced on Friday his departure from Racing at the end of the season and will therefore play his last match at Meinau on Sunday in the colors of his training club, during the derby against Metz.
“Sunday will be my last match at Meinau with Racing. It is with great emotion that I make this announcement. I didn't think I would cry. This club has seen me grow, allowed me to express myself at the highest level,” declared the striker who scored his 100th goal in L1 this season during the pre-match press conference.
“I want to thank everyone at the club who crossed my path. I also want to thank the supporters who gave me so much love. Strasbourg will always remain in my heart,” continued the former international (13 caps, 3 goals), who celebrated his 37th birthday on Thursday.
“I came here when I was 15. I always gave my best on the pitch. I have never cheated. It has always been my club and it will remain so. These are unforgettable moments that will remain forever engraved in my heart. It’s really a pleasure to play in this Meinau stadium,” he added.
Trained in Racing, Kevin Gameiro played his first match with Strasbourg in September 2005 and then enjoyed a rich career which took him to Lorient, Paris SG, Seville, Atlético Madrid and Valencia. He has four Europa League titles (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018), a French championship title with PSG (2013) and a Spanish Cup (2019).
Gameiro was one of the few experienced players in a Strasbourg squad that has been rejuvenated since the takeover of the American consortium BlueCo last summer, which focuses above all on the development of young players with high potential.
“It was a pleasure for me to work with Kevin Gameiro this year. He was a positive example,” praised his trainer Patrick Vieira. “I hope the young players in the group have taken a little from him to also have a great career. We can thank Kevin for the years he spent here. “It’s an example of the behavior you need to have on and off the field to have a great career.”
Strasbourg (13th), which has ensured its maintenance, welcomes Metz, currently a roadblock, on Sunday.
