The “compliance department” of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is looking into a potential conflict of interest concerning the boss of the Mercedes team, the body announced on Tuesday.
Without naming names or teams, the FIA said it had “become aware of speculation in the media surrounding the allegation that confidential information was passed to an F1 team principal by a member of F1 staff. FOM”, the company that owns the commercial rights to F1.
“The FIA Compliance Department is studying the matter,” the FIA added in a press release.
The specialized media have made the connection between Toto Wolff, boss of the Mercedes team, and his wife Susie Wolff, general director of the F1 Academy, the women's competition administered by the FOM.
The launch of the investigation by the FIA was initially revealed by a specialized media, which led to reactions from the FIA, then from Mercedes.
“We take note of the press release published by the FIA this evening (Tuesday) which echoes unfounded allegations coming from a single media outlet,” explains a spokesperson for Toto Wolff’s team in a press release.
“The team did not receive any information from the FIA Compliance Department on this subject and was very surprised to learn of the existence of this investigation through the media,” continues this spokesperson before add: “We totally reject these accusations” regarding “the integrity and compliance of our team manager.”
