Football: with rural paintings outside San Siro, a committed artist denounces Saudi Arabia

The transalpine painter represented all the big players who left Europe in recent months to join Saudi Arabia. Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Karim Benzema and Roberto Mancini all had the right to their mural near Milan's San Siro stadium.

The artist also attacked the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. Alexsandro Palombo's action follows various positions taken by human rights activists who claim that the Saudi government is engaging in "sportswashing", a term coined to mean the use of sport as a means to improve its international reputation and its “soft power”.

Mohammed bin Salman was asked by Fox News during an interview this week about the term “sportswashing”. The Saudi defended himself: “If sportswashing is going to increase my GDP by 1%, then we will continue to practice sportswashing. I have a 1% growth in my GDP thanks to sport and I am aiming for an additional 1.5%. Call it what you want but we’re going to get that 1.5%.”

As part of its “sportwashing” project called “Vision 2030”, the Gulf Kingdom has a sovereign fund of around $620 billion which will allow Saudi Arabia to host the Club World Cup in December , and, perhaps, organize the 2030 or 2034 World Cup.
