Football: the end of the Ajax-Feyenoord match played on Wednesday behind closed doors

The remaining 35 minutes of the “Klassieker” between Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam will be played on Wednesday behind closed doors, announced the Dutch Football Federation, after the match was stopped on Sunday due to excesses by Ajacid supporters. “A match should preferably be decided on the field... the match must be resumed as soon as possible,” explained the KNVB, specifying that the match would start at 2:00 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT).

Ajax, four-time European champions and an institution in the Netherlands, were trailing 3-0 after 55 minutes on Sunday, humiliated in front of their fans by Feyenoord, their biggest national rival. A sign of the club's poor health, on and off the field, many Ultras then burst onto the pitch of the Johan-Cruyff Arena. The referee had no choice but to send both teams to the locker room.

Violence spread outside the field, with furious fans destroying the entrance to the stadium and fighting with mounted police armed with tear gas to disperse the crowd. Ajax then quickly fired its director of football, Sven Mislintat, in the evening, justifying that he “lacked general support within the organization.” The man is under prosecution for a potential conflict of interest during the summer transfer window following the recruitment of Croatian full-back Borna Sosa.

Ajax, held to a draw on Thursday evening at home (3-3) by Olympique de Marseille in the Europa League, is currently going through one of the worst sporting crises in its 123 years of existence. With only five points in four matches, the club, 36 times national champion, is off to its worst start in the Eredivise since the 1964/1965 season.
