Fencing: the Individual European Championships finally in Plovdiv in June

The European Individual Fencing Championships, which are expected for the first time since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian and Belarusian fencers, are finally to be contested in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from June 16 to 18, announced Wednesday the European Fencing Confederation.

The event had been withdrawn during the month of May at the European Games, scheduled for Krakow (Poland) from June 21 to July 2, due to fears of refusal of visas to fencers of these two nationalities.

“On May 31, in a letter signed by Emmanuel Katsiadakis, Acting President, the FIE explained the decisions taken by the FIE Executive Committee, which resulted in ordering the EFC (European Fencing Confederation) to organize an individual zonal championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from June 16 to 18,” Eurofencing said in a statement just over two weeks before the competition.

It must be the first competition of Russian and Belarusian fencers meeting the criteria of neutrality. The last event before being a World Cup stage in Tbilisi on Friday and Saturday.

Fears about the possibility for these athletes to obtain an entry visa to Poland had led the executive committee to remove its value of European Championships from the individual competition of the European Games.

"The European Confederation wanted to postpone them to October but the International Fencing Federation (FIE) wanted all the continents to compete at the same time to avoid unfairness in the race for points for Olympic qualification", explained to AFP the president of the French Federation Bruno Gares.

Following IOC recommendations, Russian and Belarusian fencers can only participate in individual fencing events. The team tournament of the European Games will therefore serve as a European Championship and will allocate the points for Olympic qualification.

The situation faced by fencing with the European Games is likely to arise for other sports. Among those present in Krakow, others, such as canoeing, shooting or table tennis have lifted the generalized sanctions targeting Russians and Belarusians.

But Warsaw, a key supporter of kyiv, implemented travel restrictions last September as part of sanctions against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

Last month, for example, Russian tennis player Vitalia Diatchenko was refused access on board a flight of the Polish national airline (LOT) from Cairo to Nice via Warsaw. The restrictions apply up to “airport crossings”.
