Europa League: Marseille complains to UEFA about the referee appointed for the return against Villarreal

OM sent a letter to UEFA on Tuesday expressing their dissatisfaction and incomprehension after the appointment of Romanian referee Itsvan Kovacs for their Thursday match at Villarreal, AFP learned from a source with knowledge of the file.

Itsvan Kovacs was appointed to referee on Thursday the round of 16 second leg of the Europa League that OM, winners 4-0 in the first leg, will play at Villarreal. He had already refereed the first leg of the Champions League play-off lost by OM on the pitch of Panathinaikos in August.

The Romanian referee notably sent off Geoffrey Kondogbia for two yellow cards, the first of which, very severe, was shown in the 32nd second of the match. The Marseillais, finally beaten 1-0, also criticized him for not having whistled a penalty in favor of their winger François-Régis Mughe.

The following week, OM were eliminated on penalties after the return match, marked by other refereeing decisions deemed to be contrary. The club sent a letter to UEFA after this double confrontation to complain about the refereeing of the two matches.

The appointment of Mr. Kovacs was perceived as “clumsiness” and “a lack of respect” for OM, explained the source consulted by AFP. “We are not happy and we do not understand very well, there are a lot of good referees,” she added. The same source confirmed to AFP that a letter had been written in the morning to be sent to UEFA.
