Euro handball: “Les Bleus on the roof of Europe”, “an unbearable Danish destiny”… the press review after the French coronation

“In a matter of minutes, gold became silver: Gidsel was never so disappointed and Pytlick struggled to hold back his tears.” The main Danish daily, Jyllands-Posten, sums up in this way the final lost to the wire by Denmark, who led - by one score - during the entire second half against Guillaume Gille's men. This same Danish daily also headlined another article published this Sunday “Are we about to lose everything we know?” The Danes, favorites of the competition and reigning world champions, have not been full of confidence with this defeat, which comes 179 days before the opening of the Olympic tournament.

For its part, one of the three main national dailies, Politiken, also placed Denmark's defeat on its front page this Monday. A photo of Mikkel Hansen, in tears, is visible on the front page of the daily. On its website, the national media asked in particular “why did Mikkel Hansen spend so much time on the bench?”

Finally, B.T. was more enthusiastic about the performance of Nikolaj Bredahl Jacobsen's men, while retaining a bitter taste for this small Danish underperformance: "An unbearable Danish fate - but we still take our hat off."

In France, national and regional daily newspapers congratulated the French handball team. The newspaper L'Équipe referred to the recurrence of French titles by headline “Encore et encore”. The daily La Montagne also reserved its front page for the French victory, writing “France wins”.

The regional daily from Grenoble and its surroundings, Le Dauphiné Libéré, wrote like some others “Les Bleus on the roof of Europe”, a title which perfectly and simply sums up this tricolor victory, which propels them to the top of European handball and global. Generally speaking, the main French newspaper headlines placed the French victory on their front pages, such as Ouest-France or L'Indépendant, highlighting the Catalan pivot Ludovic Fabregas, the only Frenchman in the typical team of the competition.
