The Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, reigning world champion and winner of four “Monuments”, has extended his contract with Alpecin-Deceuninck until the end of 2028, the Belgian cycling team announced on Monday.
“This extension is a logical choice for me (...). I have grown at the same time as the team, and I always have the feeling that we are progressing,” greeted the 29-year-old rider, quoted in a press release.
“What is also important is that Alpecin-Deceuninck is a team present in several disciplines, it is the perfect team for me to continue racing on the road, in mountain biking and in cyclocross,” added the little -son of Raymond Poulidor, six-time cyclo-cross world champion.
Winner on the road in particular of four “Monuments”, the most prestigious classics of the season (two Tours of Flanders, a Paris-Roubaix, a Milan-Sanremo), Mathieu van der Poel began his 2024 season just last weekend on Milan-Sanremo, a race won by his teammate Jasper Philipsen and which the Dutchman finished in 10th place after becoming a luxury teammate for the Belgian sprinter in the final.
“We are obviously delighted with the extension of Mathieu van der Poel’s contract, for which we had a long-term plan from the start,” commented Philip and Christoph Roodhooft, the bosses of the structure for which “MVDP » has been running since his formative years. “Just like Mathieu, the team is always hungry for new victories, and the world champion that he is plays a big role in these objectives, like other talents present in the men's team as in the women's team” , they added.
