Champions League “Haaland? He’s nowhere then he scores a hat-trick,” laughs one of his teammates

The last time Manchester City hosted RB Leipzig was not a night Josko Gvardiol remembers with joy.

The Croatia international was then part of a Leipzig defense shredded by City's attack, with Erling Haaland scoring five goals in a 7-0 Champions League last-16 rout in March.

Eight months later, as the two teams prepare to clash on the penultimate day of Group G of the competition, Gvardiol, now part of City's defence, knows he has no no need to worry about a similar night of misery.

“I'm happy to be his teammate,” Gvardiol said when asked what the difference was between playing against or with Haaland. It wasn't just Haaland, it was the whole team on the pitch, it was a tough game. As a centre-back, I was looking forward to facing Haaland, but it ended badly. He scored five goals in 60 minutes. When I saw him being replaced, I was happy.”

City have won the Champions League for the first time and are off to a good start in their bid to retain the trophy. They are so far flawless in the group and a point on Tuesday would ensure them first place ahead of Leipzig, who are also guaranteed to participate in the knockout phase.

Haaland reached the 50-goal mark in the Premier League in record time last weekend and Gvardiol said it was remarkable to see the Norwegian in action. “At the start of the match he is nowhere, then he comes and scores a hat-trick. What he did, I don’t understand how, but I appreciate it,” the 21-year-old said.

City manager Pep Guardiola could soon have some new defensive options with the announcement of the return of John Stones, who has been out since the start of November. “John Stones is getting better. He won't play, maybe a few minutes. He is very close to coming back,” he said.

Looking ahead to Tuesday's match, Guardiola added that the priority is to ensure his team grabs top spot. “We have to win or draw. The first step is taken for both teams, congratulations to Leipzig. It's important to finish first, it's prestigious and it means the second leg of the round of 16 at home. It’s not decisive, but it’s a small advantage,” he said.
