Champions Cup: Toulon on the verge of elimination after its defeat against Munster

Toulon lost at home this Saturday against Munster (18-29) for the 3rd day of the Champions Cup. Paia’aua (23rd) and Du Preez (54th) scored the RCT tries but the Irish scored four by Nankivell (31st), Zebo (37th), Ahern (47th) and Nash (59th). With this setback, the Toulonnais are on the verge of elimination even if mathematically, everything remains possible.

The Toulonnais started their meeting perfectly. With a lot of pace at the start of the match, Melvyn Jaminet scored the first points of this game (3-0, 16th). Then the Varois thought they had made the break thanks to Paia'aua's try served by Waniqolo after a breakthrough from 22 meters.

The RCT therefore led quietly (10-0, 22nd) before Crowley (10-3, 28th) and Nankivell put the two teams back on level terms (10-10, 31st). Then again thanks to Jaminet (13-10, 35th), Toulon got back in front before the break. But on a last brilliant inspiration from Crowley who stole a ball over the RCT defense, Simon Zebo gave Munster the advantage before returning to the locker room (13-17, 38th). Great first half, without an observation phase which turned to the advantage of the Irish.

Although they had returned well, the Toulonnais were punished by much more realistic visitors. Crowley kicked to turn the game around and Ahern found himself facing Biggar. The RCT player completely missed his tackle and the Irishman was going to flatten (13-22, 47th). Jaminet revived Toulon's hopes when he perfectly offset De Preez who was going to score a deserved try at the end of a good offensive phase (18-22, 54th).

But five minutes later, Jaminet condemned his team. On a candle from Casey, the Frenchman did not jump on the ball and Nash took the opportunity to increase the gap (18-29, 59th). The Toulonnais, powerless, were unable to react and therefore bowed heavily to Mayol. Even if they are in bad shape, mathematically everything is still possible. It is imperative to win in Glasgow on the next day.
