Champions Cup: 24 clubs, four pools of six and different opponents... The EPCR unveils the new format of the competition

The EPCR, the body which organizes the Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup, has unveiled the new format of the intercontinental competitions (now with the South African provinces) for the 2023-2024 season. Since the Covid crisis, the format of the competition is constantly evolving. For the coming season, 24 clubs participating in the Champions Cup will be divided into four groups of six, and the 18 teams entered in the Challenge Cup will be divided into three groups of six.

The four Irish teams will be placed in a different pool, like the two South African provinces (Stormers and Bulls). There will be two French teams per group. Each club will play four games against four different opponents who are not from their own league, either at home or away. At the end of the group stage, the four highest ranked clubs from each group will qualify for the round of 16, and the clubs that finish in fifth place will be transferred to the round of 16 of the Challenge Cup.

"These new formats will make the tournaments more competitive as each club will face four different opponents, home or away, during the group stage," EPCR said in a statement. The four pools of six will be determined by a draw which will take place on Wednesday June 21.

Stade Rochelais, recently crowned in the Champions Cup, as well as the three winners of the other leagues - Saracens (Premiership), Munster (United Rugby Championship) and the winner of the Top 14 (Toulouse or La Rochelle) - will be placed in the hat 1. If Stade Rochelais does the double by winning the Brennus shield, then it will be Leinster (finalist of the previous edition) who will join hat 1.
