Australian Open: Medvedev tames Auger-Aliassime in three sets and advances to the eighth

Russian Daniil Medvedev, world No.3, qualified for the round of 16 of the Australian Open on Saturday in Melbourne by sweeping Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Medvedev, 27, reached this stage of the competition in the Australian tournament for the fifth time in his career, delivering a serious and diligent performance against the 30th in the world.

The winner of the 2021 US Open never trembled against the 23-year-old Canadian, whom he beat for the seventh time in as many confrontations.

Medvedev won the first round without problem, against Auger-Aliassime, who fell to 30th place in the world after climbing to 6th place in the ATP in 2022.

“FAA” then showed his teeth by pocketing his opponent's service at the start of the second set, before being pulled up and then dropping his throw in to lose 6-4.

The last round was not more complicated for Medvedev, who will face the Portuguese Nuno Borges (69th), surprising winner on Saturday of the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (13th) 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6).

Dimitrov, however, remained on a successful end of the 2023 season with a Masters 1000 final in Paris, lost to Novak Djokovic, but also on a victory during the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane at the beginning of January.

If Medvedev is preparing to play his 14th round of 16 in a Grand Slam tournament, his opponent, aged 26, will discover this level, he who had never passed the second round in a Major.
